Cambridge English Exams - 2018

Each year the children in Year 3 to Year 9 at La Garenne work towards taking a Cambridge exam. The Cambridge exams are designed and developed to motivate children to learn and improve their English. They cover four language skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking - and bring learning to life.

At the beginning of the academic year our students are assessed and divided into levels - Starters, Movers, Flyers, KET, PET, FCE. The official Cambridge textbooks and materials are used by our teachers, once a week, to prepare the students for their exam at the end of the year. The Cambridge exams are linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) - the international standard to describe language ability. This makes it easy to see the progress each child is making in English, and for employers and educational institutions to recognise their ability when they leave school.

La Garenne School is proud to be an official preparation centre.

Exam Dates at La Garenne:

  • Young Learner Exams (Starters, Movers & Flyers) - Wednesday 16th May
  • KET & PET (Speaking) - Thursday 31st May
  • KET & PET (Reading, Writing & Listening) - Saturday 2nd June
  • FCE (Reading & Use of English, Writing & Listening) - Wednesday 30th May
  • FCE (Speaking) - Thursday 31st May

Good Luck Everyone!

Information for Parents - taken from the official Cambridge website.

Professor Francesco Profumo, Politecnico di Torino, Italy

Cambridge English Qualifications and tests are recognised by over 20,000 universities, employers and governments in countries all around the world.

Year 9 – the time has come to say ‘au revoir’….

It will soon be time for Year 9 to move on their new schools. It has been a busy year for us all. Under our guidance, the students have been visiting schools, completing application forms, writing letters of motivation, attending interviews and spending ‘taster days’ at their chosen schools. Meanwhile we have been busy giving advice to the students and their families, completing reference forms and generally facilitating the transition of La Garenne students to their schools of choice.

Everyone’s future is now settled. Eleven students will be staying in Switzerland – ten of these will be attending our partner schools and one returning to her old school. Three will be going to schools in the USA, and one will be heading north to Scotland.

We are pleased to announce that La Garenne has recently concluded a partnership agreement with Aiglon College. We now have partnership arrangements with six leading Swiss schools: Aiglon CollegeBrillantmont, Champittet, College Beau Soleil, Le Rosey and Leysin American School.

While the partnership arrangements do not guarantee entry for our students, these schools have confidence in the quality of our school reports and other application documents. Therefore, under normal circumstances, our students are not required to take entrance tests. This simplified application process has greatly facilitated the placement of La Garenne students in these prestigious establishments.

Cooking

The Junior boys participated with their music teacher, in a cooking class making sushi. It was a fantastic experience and we are happy that the boys are able to finally cook and should they be lucky enough to enter university one day, at least they will be able to eat correctly!

Trip to the Cailler Chocolate Factory

Last week Year 3 and 4 went on a trip to the Cailler Chocolate Factory, “Maison Cailler”. This trip tied in perfectly with their IPC topic this term “Chocolate”. The children completed a workshop and learned how to make their own chocolate bars including adding ingredients for texture and how to decorate using icing bags and smarties. They impressed the staff with their knowledge of cocoa beans, especially with their geography skills when they were able to name and explain where cocoa trees grow and the climate and conditions they need to grow.

They went on an exciting interactive journey through chocolate right back to the 1500’s, where they learned about how the Aztecs first used to drink chocolatl and use the cocoa bean as money, up to the ingredients and techniques modern day chocolatiers use now. Of course they also had to do some work and help the chocolate factory quality control a variety of chocolates before they could be shipped off all around the world!

As if all this wasn’t enough fun, they had a great time playing in the playground at lunch time and completing an interactive chocolate quiz and cinema experience to see how much they could remember!
